The main difference in set top boxes is their ability to record & store programmes, cutting out the need for a DVD recorder / Player.

A basic set-top box will not record (costing around £35)
Whereas a 180 Gig Box will record and store 100’s of part or whole programmes.
You may only want to record a single song or a scene from a programme, that’s easy.
You can also record many programmes simultaneously or pause them at your favourite spots. (costing from £80-£190, Bigger storage, bigger price)

ALSO, you can wind back the TV programme or Programmes that have already been running on the Channel your set is currently on. In other words if you left your TV on while you nipped down to the shops and got talking to someone, all you have to do on your return is wind back as far as you want and view the programme you missed and then continue to view normally.
